Jeff Kaplan calls out player complaining about being banned for being toxic

Overwatch’s game director Jeff Kaplan called out a player complaining about being banned from the game by revealing out the number of complaints that was filed against them.

In a post on the official Overwatch forums, a player complained about being banned from the game for a week due to “disruptive gameplay,” claiming that the reports haven’t been properly verified, and thus delivered false judgement. Kaplan then looked into the account and responded that the ban might have been well deserved.

“We checked the IP address of the account you posted from and found a suspended account,” he wrote. “That account has a total of 2247 complaints filed against it — making it one of the worst offending accounts we’ve seen. The account has also been silenced for a total of 9216 hours. There are 3 gameplay suspensions on the account as well as 7 silences against this account (these are for abusive chat and/or spam). There is also a manual GM account suspension for ‘massive griefing’ levied.”

Kaplan clarified that there is a possibility that the account isn’t the right one, telling the original poster to let him know which BattleTag the original poster was referring to, so that they can look into the matter.

This incident serves to be an indicator of how successful the new reporting system for the game currently is. After a long period of complaints from players that reporting leads to slaps on the wrists and not much more, a new reporting system was put in place last month which promised to deal “increased penalties to players in response to verified reports of bad behavior.”
